Last week, while opening Google Play Store on my phone, I got an error message: Authentication is required. You need to sign into your Google Account. RetryI wasnt sure why this error popped up my two Gmail addresses are already added and synced in the Google accounts settings of my phone. On the Google help forums, some said it occurs if you have an outdated Google Play Store app.

However, even after installing the latest version, the Authentication required error would come up whenever I accessed Google Play Store to update or download apps. I could of course download/update apps by logging into the Google Play website on my laptop browser, but that is very convenient. Fortunately, I have found some effective methods to fix Authentication is required error in Google Play Store:

Google Play Store Authentication required error fix

Google play "authentication is required" error message screenshot

First method: Clear Google Play Store Data

This is the first method you should try for any Google Play Store related errors. It is swift and effective in fixing various Android market error codes.
  1. Go to System Settings >> Apps >> App
  2. Scroll down and select Google Play Store from the list of apps
  3. Tap Clear Data
  4. Now go back and open Google Play Store

Additionally, you can also clear data for Google Service Framework.
You can tap the menu icon on the top left to see that the Google Play app is synced the current Gmail account. Proceed to download apps or update your installed apps.

Method 2: Remove and add back Gmail account in device settings

  • Go to settings >> Accounts >> Tap on Google >> Select your primary Gmail account
  • Tap menu or the dotted button on the top right >> Tap Remove account and confirm
Now open Google Play Store and you will be asked to login your Gmail account
Follow instructions and add your Google account. The error should now be solved.

Method 3: Uninstall Google Play Store update

Please note that uninstalling Google Play Store update may not be possible on devices running Android 5. Lollipop, Android 6 MarshMallow or the latest Android 7 Nougat operating system. Still, you can try these steps and see if it works:
  • Go to Settings >> Apps >> All
  • (On LG devices you navigate to settings >> General >> App. Also tap on top right menu icon to enable show system apps)
  • From the list of apps, tap on Google Play Store >> Select Uninstall updates

This will revert Google Play Store app to its original unupdated version. The old version might not have the same bug that is causing issues in the latest Google Play app. Now go ahead and open the Google Play Store app and see if you still get the Authentication required error.

Lastly, I see that some other blogs have recommended factory reset as a method. But I dont think you have to go through that route,

If youve just purchased a new phone and getting this error code while attempting an app installation, you may have set the wrong date/time on your device. In such a case, simply resetting the correct time will fix the issue. Sometimes Play Store error 18 is caused by low storage issue and you will need to make enough space in your device before app installation. Due to error 501 in Google Play Store Android users cant install, download or update many apps and games on their Android phones or tablets. This problem is caused most of the time if you have multiple apps installations going on in the Play Store. In such case, cancel all the app installations and download them one by one. If you are a custom ROM user, you may get the 501 error code while updating Google Play Services. This is caused because you flashed an incompatible Gapps package or a buggy OS. In such a case, reflashing the OS + Gapps package could be the solution. In my case, the Google Play Store error code 501 popped up while installing an app update. Here are all the possible methods to fix Android error 501 in Google Play:

Android Fix: Google Play Error Code: -501

Google Play Store Error 501 while updating a Google app

Method 1: Reinstall

Simply cancel the installation process and try installing the app or game. If that didnt fix it, uninstall the app/game completely and download it again from Google Play Store.

Method 2: Uninstall updates for Google play Services

This method will probably solve error 501 message while updating Google Play apps like Google Play Services, Google +, Google Play Games, YouTube, Gmail and so on.

  • Go to Settings >> Apps >> All
  • Scroll and select Google Play Services
    • Tap Uninstall updates and clear data
  • Also,  select "Google Play Store" and tap "Uninstall updates"
  • Again, go to Apps >> All >> select Google Service framework
    • Tap Clear Data
  • Open Google Play and download or update an app

Method 3: Resetting App preferences

Resetting app preferences will restore default settings for your apps. This wont delete any data from your Android device.

  • Go to settings >> Apps
  • Press menu or the three dots on the top right
  • Select Reset app preferences >> Tap OK

Method 4: For custom ROM users (Cyanogenmod, Paranoid Android, SlimROM etc)

First try reflashing your OS and then a compatible GAPPs package. Go to recovery and wipe cache partition. See if that solved the 501 error in Google Play. If that didnt work, you will need to entirely wipe the device (factory reset) and then run a fresh installation. For the fresh reinstallation try a different ROM and a new Gapps package. Reboot into recovery and proceed to flash the new zip files. That will almost certainly fix the 501 error message while updating Google Play Services.

Thanks for reading. Hope one of the above methods fixed Cant download app due to error code -501 in Google Play Store issue. If you have alternative solutions please suggest them in the comments.

This is a common issue faced by many Android users. Due to the Google Play Store not accessible
or Google Play Store has stopped working error, updating apps or installing new ones becomes almost impossible. Users get this error message as soon as they open the Google market app or Play Store. While users have resolved this issue by simply restarting their smartphone or tablet, that hasnt worked as a long term solution as the error pops up again and again. Some have tried signing in using a different Gmail (google) account and still unable to access the Play Store. If you are getting the Play Store has stopped or not accessible error, here is the most effective fix:

  • Go to system Settings
  • Select Apps >> All
  • From the list, scroll down and select Google Play Store
  • Tap Uninstall updates

You have now reverted back to the original/factory version of the Play Store. The Android market app will eventually update to the latest version but this seems to resolve the issue of not being able to open Google Play app.

Another method that may resolve the Play store inaccessible error is by downloading or updating apps via Google Play Store website on your desktop. Simply open the browser on your computer and then log into Play Store using your username and password. Select the app or game you want to update/install and then select your device (Smartphone/tablet). Click install or update. The download should automatically begin.

If you are using a custom ROM, then you will need to reflash the correct GAPPs package to get rid of the "Google Play Services has stopped" error.

Error retrieving information from server [DF-DLA-11] [DF-DLA-12]. Both of these Google Play Store errors pop up during app installation and specially during an app update. The first thing you'd want to check is your internet connection. If your internet connection is too slow it may return the above errors. The error may have been caused by a faulty network connection.

Update for "app" could not be downloaded due to an error 489 in Google Play Store- This error can affect any app or game- Facebook, Viber, Dead Trigger, Clash of Clans etc. Most of the times this update/download error seems to resolve automatically after a few hours. In my case, it was due to a poor internet connection and when I switched to mobile data, the problem was solved. However, it can also occur sometimes due to a Google Play Store bug and may require you to clear data/cache of Google Play app. I have posted below two possible methods to fix error 489 in Google Play Store.

How to Fix  Google Play Store Error 489 on Android Devices

As shown in the image below the exact error format is like this: Update for YouTube could not be downloaded due to an error (489).

Update for YouTube could not be downloaded due to an error (489)

Method 1: Removing and adding Google account

This is the same method used to fix other Google Play Errors like RPC:S-5:AEC-0Error 924 and Error 907.
    1. Go to Settings >> Accounts >> Google
    2. Select your primary Gmail account >> Press menu button on your device and Select Remove account
    3. Again, Go to Settings >> Accounts >> Google >>Select Add account >> Choose Google >> Existing
    4. Add back the Gmail account you removed in the previous step
    5. Open Google Play Store app and download the app or game that was giving the error 489 initially

    Method 2: Checking network connection

The 489 error is mostly resolved by resetting or changing your internet connection medium. Check your Wi-Fi speed by opening a normal website on your mobile browser. If it doesnt open or takes too long to load, then your network is having some problems right now. Turn off torrents or anything thats consuming the bandwidth. Try to run the installation again. If you have access to the router, turn it off and wait for 10-20 seconds. Then turn the router on again. Sometimes this resolves the slow connection issue and lets you download apps or games from Play Store without giving the error 489. If your connection is not fixed, you have to switch to a different Wi-Fi connection or you can use your mobile data for the installation, but the latter might cost you extra so dont download a very large games via mobile data- unless you have subscribed for unlimited data plans.

Method 3: Uninstalling and reinstalling the app

If you are getting the Android error 489 during update, you may be able to fix it by simply uninstalling the app or game that you are trying to update, and then reinstall it in Google Play Store.

Method 4: Clear cache for Google Play Store and Google Play Services

    1. Go to Settings >> Apps >> All
    2. Now from the app list select "Google Play Store"
    3. Tap "Force Stop" and "Clear Data"
    4. Similar from the app list select "Google Service Framework"
    5. Tap "Clear Data"

Method 5: Uninstall Google Play Store updates
Many Google Play Store errors are caused by operating system incompatibility with Android market. In such cases, uninstalling the latest Google Play updates will fix the error.
    1. Go to Settings >> Apps >> All
    2. Select "Google Play Store"
    3. Tap "Uninstall Update"
    4. Open Google Play store and try to download/update your app or game

Let us know if any of the above methods solved the error 489 in Google Play Store for your android device. If you have other methods or solutions please drop a comment.

The Unknown Error Code During Application Install: 961 or simply Unknown install error 961 is a common Google Play error which stops you from downloading, installing or updating apps and games in the Android app store. I have got this error in different occasions while trying to download apps like Viber, YouTube, Facebook, Candy Crush and Clash of Clans in my Samsung Galaxy S5. A simple solution or fix for error 961 is to simply clear the cache of Google Play Store from the apps settings. Another method involves booting into recovery and then wiping the device cache of your Android phone or tablet. Here are the methods to fix unknown error 961 in Google Play Store

How to Fix Unknown Error 961 Google Play Store

    Google Play Store

    Method 1: Clearing Data

    1. Go to Settings >> Apps (application manager)>> Scroll down and select Google Play Store
    2. Click Clear Cache and Clear Data
    3. Now open your Google Play Store app
    4. Install or update the app or game that was initially giving you the 961 error.

Method 2: Wiping Cache via recovery

This method has been helpful to users running custom ROMs like Cyanogenmod, Paranoid Android. SlimROM etc.
    1. Turn off your android phone or tablet
    2. Hold the volume up key and the power key at the same time. (alternatively, you might have to press volume down + power key for your particular device)
    3. When you see the boot screen, let go of the buttons.
    4. Use the volume down key to navigate to the recovery mode and select it by volume down
    5. If you are already in recovery mode, go to step 4.
    6. Use volume button to go to Wipe Cache and then press the power button to select it.
    7. Again, go to advanced menu >> select Wipe dalvik cache
    8. Go back to main menu, select reboot system now
One of the above methods should work to solve Google Play Store error 961. If you have any other quick fix or a better solution please drop a comment.
